17.01  Cappelle Medicee

The intervention for the new exit of the Cappelle Medicee is a chance to reflect on how to insert a new layer of contemporary architecture in an extremely delicate context. The methodology chosen for the project does not seek mimesis but the modulation of existing phenomena to redefine a clear atmosphere appropriate to the place. The general theme is to design an urban room in which several existing objects - the elevator, the buttress, the portals of the chapels, etc. - coexist to define a recognizable and sophisticated space. A new exit from the museum that is not just a space of passage but also an interior space.
The wall, the new pavé and the roof are the key elements of the project that define new forms of transition between the internal and external space. The brick, the main material of the new elements, underlines the concrete and symbolic character of the project. The unitary and porous aspect of the urban room creates a new and recognizable balance between the old and the new architecture.
