19.01 School in Bologna

The proposal for the new school “Carracci” in Bologna defines a new entrance to the hills surrounding the site. Creating walkable roofs conceived as panoramic terraces over the city and the surrounding park, the new school functions like a supporting brick wall for the landscape establishing a gentle relationship with the surrounding nature. Great attention was paid to the existing natural environment and vegetation, trying to build the new school on the same footprint of the existing building, safeguarding all the existing trees. The project results from two intertwining rectangles creating two courtyards, whose point of contact is where the primary school and the lower secondary school meet. There, the gym and the civic center share their entrance. The courts become not only necessary and protected places for the life of the schools, but also privileged space for carrying out some activities of the neighbourhood.
